HIGASHI NO JOUNETSU Passion of the East

EXPO 25.11.2011 – 31.12.2011

A contemporary Asian theme group show inspired by Ukiyo, “floating world”, which described the urban lifestyle, especially the pleasure-seeking aspects, of Edo-period Japan.

The “Floating World” culture developed in Yoshiwara, the licensed red-light district of Edo (modern Tokyo), which was the site of many brothels, tea houses and kabuki theaters.

The “Floating World” referring to a conception of an evanescent world, impermanent, fleeting beauty and a realm of entertainments (kabuki, courtesans, geisha) divorced from the responsibilities of the mundane, everyday world.

… Living only for the moment, turning our full attention to the pleasures of the moon, the snow, the cherry blossoms and the maple leaves; singing songs, drinking wine, diverting ourselves in just floating, floating; … refusing to be disheartened, like a gourd floating along with the river current: this is what we call the floating world… Asai Ryōi

In Japan of the 1800’s, the color woodcut print was the most popular art form of the day. The artists of the so-called floating world or Ukiyo-e genre (“pictures of the floating world”) portrayed real life personages and situations as the subject matter for their wood block prints. Ukiyo-e artists created extraordinary portraits of Kabuki Actors, Geisha, Sumo Wrestlers and other notables, as well as landscapes and architectural views of old Japan but there was however another aspect to the art of the Ukiyo-e, that is the erotic art of Shunga, the “Images of Spring”.

The aesthetics of Shunga still resonate in the contemporary world of Ero-manga, Ecchi art and Anime productions. Thus figuratively comprises an Oriental hymn to carnal pleasures and to the Game of Love.

This exhibition will showcase a number of artists that have been inspired by the traditional and the contemporary erotic art forms of Japan and the Orient, these art forms are clearly visible in the works of the participating artists.
